Germany

Food Culture:  Fine beers and sausages may be what traditionally come to mind when you think of German foods. However, the cuisine of this centrally located European nation is heavily influenced by surrounding nations and fertile lands. Indeed, there are many water sources and a climate that lends itself to growing year-round.

The abundance of sausage and other preserved meats is actually the result of a unique problem: There is simply too much meat available, and sausage is a great method for meat preservation. Pork is used most frequently, and beef, game birds, venison, and rabbits are popular choices, flavored with juniper berries, mustard, caraway, dill, or horseradish. Of course, the proximity to water sources makes fish quite popular, as well. And dairies provide many varieties of cheeses; soft cheeses are often found on German plates. Dessert is generally a pastry (such as Berliners, or jelly doughnuts), cake (black forest, chocolate, or fruit cake) or heavy cookies, such as gingerbread.

While it may be true that the traditional German meal consists of meat and potatoes, the unique landscape and cultural influences of Germany create some fantastic cuisine. Of course, no German meal would be complete without the addition of a locally produced beer, wine, or schnapps! Taste the Culture of Germany!
