Poland

Food Culture:  Substantial, bold, and culturally rich—traditional Polish food is heavily meat based and relies on cabbages, noodles and other similar, supplemental ingredients. Typical dishes include pierogi (dumplings topped with a variety ingredients), bigos (a sauerkraut and meat stew), gulasz (think Goulash and read our article on a similar dish from Hungary), and placki kartoflane (potato pancakes).

The cuisine represents the influences of the country’s Slavic neighbors as well as Turkey, Germany, Italy, and France. Meals can be virtual events—the quantity of food and time to prepare and eat not to be taken lightly. Cheeses are used in both main dishes and desserts, as well as snacks. Soup often preceeds the main course, with pastries putting a nice finish on the meal. Styles vary from region to region, driven largely by local availability and cultural ties. While fast food (both domestic and foreign) continues to gain a foothold in daily life, there’s a recognizable slow-food movement underway within the country, as well. Taste the Culture of Poland!
