GeoCultural Background:  A history of political stability and expertise in technology and commerce help explain the Swiss phenomenon: a post-industrial economy that reported one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.

Founded in 1291 as a union of three cantons chafing against Hapsburg rule, Switzerland has been independent since 1815; its borders now encompass 26 cantons embracing three official languages—German, French, and Italian. Foreigners make up 25 percent of the workforce. Switzerland competes in global markets with exports that make up almost half of the nation’s economy; however the Swiss in a 2001 referendum voted against joining the European Union.

The UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank, suffered big losses as the secrecy practices of Swiss banks continued to come under relentless attack.

Elaborate civil defense measures and a strong militia back up the Swiss policy of permanent neutrality. Switzerland is firmly committed to world peace, and in 2002 became a member of the United Nations.

Food Culture:  Swiss cuisine centers on the country's popular cheeses and chocolates and then borrows from its neighbors France and Italy. Fondues are popular, as are the country's quiches; both dishes rely on the fine varieties of more than 400 cows milk cheeses produced in Switzerland.

Chocolate-making in the small country dates back to the 17th century and remains a significant part of the country's domestic product. Even though Swiss chocolates are sought throughout the world, the Swiss people themselves consume just over half their total production each year.

Cheese dishes and chocolates aside, most menus reflect either Itailan, French or German influences—a cuisine culture appropriately as neutral as the country's political culture! But when a region is known for fine cheeses, fine chocolates and fine watches, magnificant alps and alpine skiing, what else is truly necessary?
